## The market

Spain installed 540 MWh of batteries behind the meter in 2025 (+65%); 61% of new home solar systems came with a battery. ([SmartGridsInfo (UNEF), 12 June 2026](https://www.smartgridsinfo.es/2026/06/12/aumenta-65-instalacion-baterias-autoconsumo-2025-segun-unef))

## Rules

- A battery is part of the self-consumption installation, with no separate licence. Royal Decree-law 7/2026 lets you deduct 10% of 2026 spending on it from IRPF, up to €500, if the installation is finished and paid for in 2026. ([AEE (RDL 7/2026), 20 March 2026](https://aeeolica.org/en/resumen-del-rdl-7-2026-de-20-de-marzo-por-el-que-se-aprueba-el-plan-integral-de-respuesta-a-la-crisis-en-oriente-medio/))
- RDL 7/2026 gives storage flexible grid access and free depreciation up to €500,000 a year; RD 88/2026 lets behind-the-meter batteries join balancing markets through an independent aggregator (operating rules still being drafted). ([AEE (RDL 7/2026), 20 March 2026](https://aeeolica.org/en/resumen-del-rdl-7-2026-de-20-de-marzo-por-el-que-se-aprueba-el-plan-integral-de-respuesta-a-la-crisis-en-oriente-medio/))

## Loans, grants and tax relief

- Many towns give IBI and ICIO bonuses for self-consumption: your plan lists the ones at your address.
- Free depreciation of the investment up to €500,000 a year (RDL 7/2026). ([AEE (RDL 7/2026), 20 March 2026](https://aeeolica.org/en/resumen-del-rdl-7-2026-de-20-de-marzo-por-el-que-se-aprueba-el-plan-integral-de-respuesta-a-la-crisis-en-oriente-medio/))
- IDAE storage funds go to large stand-alone projects, not to company batteries.

## Questions

### How much does a 10 kWh battery cost in Spain?

€7,000–11,000 turnkey (€700–1,100 per kWh, VAT included) as of 4 October 2026: LFP battery, a 5 kW hybrid inverter, installation and set-up. Solar panels are extra.

### How much does a 1 MWh battery cost in Spain?

€220,000–320,000 turnkey excl. VAT (€220–320 per kWh) as of 4 October 2026: battery cabinets or container, PCS, EMS, installation and commissioning. Transformer, fire suppression, foundation and the connection fee are priced per site.

### MW or MWh: what is the difference?

MW is power (how much the system delivers at a moment), MWh is the energy stored. 1 MWh / 500 kW runs about 1.7 h at full power. The business standard is 2 hours: 1 MW / 2 MWh. Always compare both numbers.

### Is a licence or permit needed?

A battery is part of the self-consumption installation, with no separate licence. Royal Decree-law 7/2026 lets you deduct 10% of 2026 spending on it from IRPF, up to €500, if the installation is finished and paid for in 2026. RDL 7/2026 gives storage flexible grid access and free depreciation up to €500,000 a year; RD 88/2026 lets behind-the-meter batteries join balancing markets through an independent aggregator (operating rules still being drafted).
